Dealing With Fibromyalgia in Children?
Just recently, it was commonly believed was that there is no possibility of fibromyalgia in children. However, studies showed that one in six affected by this debilitating disease is less than 18 years old. Hence, fibromyalgia in children is actually quite prevalent. What Exactly Is Fibromyalgia? Fibromyalgia is a chronic affliction that is characterized by extreme and overwhelming pain all over the body and specifically in about 10 to 20 spots on the body. The causes for this condition are not yet known though indications point to acute stress and sleeping problems as some of the common triggers. Fibromyalgia in children is more difficult to diagnose because adults tend to dismiss the complaints of children. The children themselves do not take the pain as a serious problem unless it crosses the endurance threshold. So, it is often at that point when the child is desperate about the pain, that the problem is referred to the doctor. Fibromyalgia in children often occurs around puberty at 13 to15 years old. This is a period that brings about many changes in the bodies and minds of the children. This is one main reason why fibromyalgia in children is so difficult to diagnose in initial stages. All the symptoms of the disease, namely muscular pain, lack of sleep, lack of concentration are often attributed to the difficult age they are passing through and hence ignored. Measuring Pain of Fibromyalgia in Children An adult is quite able to correctly quantify the pain and know exactly whether the pain is a result of activities performed in the recent past or not. However, it is not so clear cut with fibromyalgia in children. Children, even the older ones are unable to correctly quantify the pain they feel because they are constantly underplaying their discomfort as well as physical and mental pain. This is a part of the growing up process. This is why fibromyalgia in children, although common, is often undetected for a long time. Things to watch Out for in Fibromyalgia in Children You need to be more careful the next time, your child complains about body and muscular ache. Observe them closely and check whether their sleeping patterns have changed. Another clue could be that they have difficulties in computing data mentally. These are some of the sure-fire symptoms that point to fibromyalgia in children. The good news is that fibromyalgia in children can be fully reversed unlike that for adults. Early diagnosis and treatment would be helpful in completely curing fibromyalgia in children. It will spare them the unnecessary pain of the symptoms as well.
