Fighting Fibromyalgia

The major symptom of the syndrome is extreme pain throughout the body. Hence, fighting fibromyalgia requires supreme effort. The other symptoms associated with fibromyalgia include tenderness and stiffness of joints, general fatigue, sleeplessness, heightened sensitivity to light, inability to focus and irritation of the bowels. The various means of fighting fibromyalgia is based on relieving the main symptoms such as pain, fatigue and sleeping problems, through various methodd. These methods include medication, proper nutrition, exercise, and other forms of therapy.

Fighting Fibromyalgia with Medicine

Currently, there is no single drug that is able to treat all the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Furthermore, patients of fibromyalgia are generally more intolerant of drugs and hence prescribing medication for them requires special attention. Doctors normally prescribe a combination of over-the-counter analgesics, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs), muscle relaxants and other pain-killers. This is normally effective in relieving the pain that characterizes the condition.

To aid the patient in getting better quality sleep and cope with the mood swings, anti-depressants are used. Other symptoms are treated with a variety of medication including anti-convulsant agents, anti-anxiety drugs, muscle relaxant drugs, sleep-modifiers, and some anti-neuralgic drugs.

Fighting Fibromyalgia Through Nutrition

Nutritional therapy is another widely accepted method used as an adjunct for fighting fibromyalgia. This approach aims at removing any toxic substances from the body, reducing the level of stress and generally provide essential nutrients in order to strengthen the body to better cope with the symptoms of fibromyalgia.

The patient is normally advised to reduce and minimize the intake of caffeine, alcohol, sugars, red meat as well as processed food items. A greater intake of fresh fruits and vegetables is highly recommended along with the necessary vitamin/mineral supplements. The recommended diet will also include plenty of clean water as well as vegetable and fruit juices.

Fighting Fibromyalgia Through Regular Light Exercise

Patients of fibromyalgia tend to shunt exercise but regular exercise has been found to make a great difference in their condition. Light and moderate exercises make the muscles healthier and reduce the intensity of pain. In addition, regular exercise has been found to improve the quality of sleep, alleviate anxiety and depression. The other benefits include greater endurance to cope with pain and inflammation.

The type of exercises recommended for fighting fibromyalgia include yoga, swimming, Tai Chi, and strengthening exercises like push-ups, weight-lifting and training by using resistance bands. It is important to note that exercises should be conducted under the supervision of a health/fitness expert so as to avoid over-stressing the muscles and causing possible injuries.

Other Forms of Therapy for Fighting Fibromyalgia

Other therapeutic techniques are often used in conjunction with medication, exercise, and nutrition to alleviate the symptoms of fibromyalgia. For example, laser therapy by using an infrared soft laser has been found effective in relieving the pain. It is also touted as able to remove toxic wastes from the body. Other therapies like massage and myotherapy are also beneficial therapeutic techniques for coping with fibromyalgia symptoms. However, deep massage is not recommended for fibromyalgia patients as it can lead to damage of small muscle fibers, aggravating the pain.
